Dr. Martens has a legendary history that traces back to 1945 near Munich, Germany. Dr. Klaus Maertens designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole after injuring his foot in a skiing accident. Teaming up with Dr. Herbert Funck, they developed and produced shoes with air-cushioned soles made from old rubber tires. The brand, initially called Dr. Maertens, gained popularity in Germany. In 1959, the decision was made to expand production and distribution globally.

Despite initial skepticism from manufacturers, the R. Griggs Group in England embraced the idea and created the first work boot with an air-cushioned sole in 1960. Named 1460, the boot was later branded as Dr. Martens in England. The range was known as AirWair and became a global phenomenon.
